Some of the Vegetarian Options to eat in Portugal

Note: Portugal is not always an easy country for vegetarians. With the exception of fish dishes, meat features in almost every dish: even dishes that could be vegetarian often have meat added for flavour.

There are a lot of vegetarian/vegan restaurants throughout the country, but there’s not a lot of options when it comes to true, national and traditional dishes that could be eaten by vegetarians/vegans.

Some of the meat/fish/seafood dishes mentioned throughout our blog can be prepared in vegetarian/vegan versions upon request. Ask at the restaurant if there are vegetarian/vegan options for the dishes you want to try.

Ervilhas com Ovos

An emblematic accompaniment to the Algarve region, the eggs are poached on top of the peas when they are almost ready to serve.

Feijão com Repolho

Stewed beans and cabbage. This dish is also very good in the soup version.

Ovos com Tomate

Eggs with tomatoes. A traditional recipe that all Portuguese grandmothers make with mastery.

Salada Montanheira

Tomato, onion, cucumber, green and red peppers, oregano, sea salt, olive oil and vinegar. This simple but very tasty salad is one of the many typical treats of the Algarve, where people are adept at arranging tricks to better withstand the summer heat.

Salada de Grão de Bico

Salada de grão de bico is a delicious portuguese chickpea salad. Chickpeas, bell peppers, onions, garlic, and parsley are tossed with oil and vinegar to make an amazing salad, perfect for summer time.
