The National Road 2 (EN2/N2) is nicknamed the Route 66 of Portugal. Finished in 1950’s, it’s the longest consistent road in the nation crossing 4 mountain ranges, 11 waterways and 35 municipalities. This is a great method to gradually go through the country and experience Portugal’s assorted culture and landscapes.
The road is 738km in length. It is the longest national road of Portugal! It begins at the city of Chaves, in the northern part, and runs south through the middle of Portugal, ending in the city of Faro.
The new Faro’s roundabout at the intersection between Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian and Rua do Alportel made it possible to remove the previous traffic lights from that location. Now it has a semi-elevated structure, ten meters in diameter, on which the number 738 is drawn on the traditional Portuguese pavement. At the center of the roundabout, the original landmark of the EN2 was also replaced, which over the past few years has become a symbol for travelers (especially bikers) who complete this mythical route that is also already a tourist attraction.
